July 6, 2007 - First Friday

Columbia County Fair and Rodeo - July 19-23
NPRA Rodeo, Junior Rodeo, 4-H auction, stock car races, live music, carnival, vendor booths, talent show, farm museum, and more. Columbia County fairgrounds.

First Friday - August 3
Join local merchants from 3-6 p.m. downtown Vernonia as they host art exhibits, music, and food.

Open Mike Night, August 3, 2007

In celebration of 100th anniversary of the Grange Hall, the Vernonia Grange will host “Open Mike Night” from 8-10pm as part of the Jamboree. All
types of family friendly music are welcome, and each performer will have 10-20 minutes.

Those interested in performing can call (503) 705-2173 you can register at 7:30 p.m. the day of the show.

- August 3-5
Once again Vernonia roll out the red carpet for alumni, friends, and neighbors during the first weekend in August.

Fifth Annual Vernonia Bear Creek 10K/5K Run/Walk Event - August 18
A 5K Run/Walk encompassing a lap of Vernonia Lake, and a 10K Run that heads south along the Banks/Vernonia Linear Trail. Both routes are flat, fast and wind through tree-lined sections of the trail, providing welcome shade for runners and walkers alike. Benefits Vernonia Cares food bank.

Alumni Picnic - August 19
The annual picnic of The Vernonia Society, V.H.S. "Old Grads", and Oregon American Alumni will take place Sunday, August 19th (always the third Sunday in August) at Anderson Park.

Registration starts at 10am. Please come and bring your friend and a picnic lunch. Coffe and cups will be provided. Hot dogs and drinks will be for sale.

First Friday - September 7

“Under Cover” Cast Performs - September 7
The Shoestring Community Players and the Greenleaf Acting Company are pleased to announce that this September they will be performing a play in Vernonia. “Under Cover - a Mysterious Melodrama!!!” is a humorous and exciting play for all ages featuring smuggling, priceless jewels and romance. When: Friday September 7 at 7 pm. Where: the Vernonia Grange Hall, on the corner of North and Washington streets.  

Tickets: $5 for adults, $3 for children, children 5 and under free.

The melodrama’s director, Alberta Hardy, is a member of the multi-talented Hardy family who has performed in the Hands-on Art variety shows of 2005 and 2006; they also performed at the most recent Open Mike Night. Several of Alberta’s siblings are in the production as are two members of Vernonia’s Pelster family.

Vernonia Pioneer Museum Talk - September 16
The Vernonia Pioneer Museum Association will host a museum talk on Sunday, September 16th, at 2 p.m. Marie (Birkenfeld) Bellingham, Stella (Bellingham) Saturn, and George Bellingham will talk about Birkenfeld's history and what it was like growing up there; it was much more than just a school and grocery store at one time.

Community-wide Garage Sales - September 16

St. Mary's Quilt Fair - September 20-23
The St. Mary's quilt fair to benefit St. Mary's church will run Thursday, September 20, through Sunday, September 23. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and admission is still just $1 per person. St. Mary’s Church is located at 960 Missouri Avenue in Vernonia.

5th Annual Vernonia Salmon Festival - October 6
The 2007 Salmon Festival and the Knee Deep in Salmon fish auction will take place Saturday October 6th from 10am - 4pm at Hawkin's Park in Vernonia.

There will be numerous artistic salmon at auction, wine tasting, music, children's games, and pumpkin carving.

Chautauqua Program at the Vernonia Library – October 15 – 7 pm
“The Portland Trailblazers’ Championship Season: An Oregon Story”, a mixture of slides, lecture, oral histories, and audio and video clips presented by Matt Love.

Vernonia High School Homecoming – October 19 @ 7 pm
VHS Loggers take on Warrenton at Vernonia High School.
Let’s see which class can round up the most alumni to attend the game. Let’s rock the grand stand. We look forward to seeing you later this month! GO LOGGERS!!

Haunted House at the Grange Hall – October 31
Volunteers wanted: actors, stage hands, clean-up, advertising, etc. Set-up as scheduled Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday.

“Say Farewell to the 50’s” Sock Hop - November 3 - 7:00 pm
Costumes optional, saddle shoes suggested, clothing required!

Veteran’s Day Potluck and Movie Night - November 11 - 5:00 pm

The Vernonia Community Church will be hosting a potluck and family movie night in honor of Veteran’s Day on Sunday November 11, 2007 at 5:00 PM at the Church.

The Vernonia Community Anti-Drug Coalition - November 15 - 7:00 pm
A community presentation will be put on by VHS and VMS students on November 15th, 7 pm at the Scout Cabin. Refreshments will be served.

Vernonia Hands-on-Art Variety Show - November 15 - 7:00 pm
DO YOU SING? DANCE? PLAY AN INSTRUMENT? PERFORM A COMEDY ROUTINE? DO MAGIC TRICKS?
If so, you are welcome to perform in the Community Variety Show! All ages Welcome! This year’s show will benefit the Vernonia Dallas
Brass program and the Vernonia Cares Holiday Food Drive! The VHS and VMS band students will be performing!

Childcare for young children will be provided by donation.

Holiday Bucks Program - November-December
It’s “Holiday Bucks” time again in Vernonia! And you know what that means. Great opportunities to receive gift certificates just for shopping in Vernonia. Here’s how it works:
Promotion runs from Friday, November 16th to Saturday, December 15th, and is open to all ages.
Customer will receive one (1) stamp per $5 purchase or transaction
When $50 in purchases are made, you the customer, fill out your card and enter it at any participating business.
All entries will be kept from week to week.
*FIRST FRIDAY December 7th is DOUBLE Stamp Day
Gift Certificates are to be redeemed at any one of the participating businesses by February 14th 2008.
Drawings will be held at noon on the following Saturdays: November 24th, December 1st , and December 8th for $25 gift certificates. Grand Finale Drawing for three more Gift Certificates (amounts to be determined) will be on Saturday, December 15th.
The Vernonia Area Chamber of Commerce, organizer of this annual event, looks forward to your participation in this exciting and fun promotion. Remember, this is a great way to support your local businesses, help keep your holiday money in Vernonia, and maybe win prizes as well!

A Spirited Old-Fashioned Christmas - December 1 - 5:00 pm
Lighted parade at 5 pm starting at WGS and ending at City Hall. Community Christmas Tree Lighting 5:30. The VHS band and choir will be performing and will also be serving refreshments.

Christmas in the Country” Booster Club Bazaar - December 1 - 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and December 2 - 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Vernonia Holiday Market at the Vernonia Community Learning Center - December 7, 14, 21, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Friday Open Air Market moves indoors for the Holidays. Join us for handmade crafts, delicious food, music, and socializing with your neighbors. Do you have a craft to sell? Tables are available call Scott at 429-0520.

Grey Dawn Gallery - Winter Exhibit Opening Celebration - December 7, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm and December 8, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Please join Grey Dawn Gallery for the opening of their new winter exhibit. They will be displaying work from internationally acclaimed photographer Christopher Burkett. They will also be introducing intricate bronze wildlife jewelry from artist Cavin Richie. Also on exhibit will be work from Jacques & Mary Regat, Jeff Patterson, J.E. Tosoni, Ian Christopher and Dave Johnson.

Show opens with their annual Christmas party on Friday, December 7th, 6:00 - 9:00 pm and continues with refreshments on Saturday, December 8th, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Christopher will be present on Friday evening. Regular gallery hours are Monday - Saturday from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Exhibit will be on display through February 29, 2008.
